“4th National FPGA Design Competition 2019”

Press Release: August 3, 2019

The “4th National FPGA Design Competition 2019” has been concluded with the grand success today at Kathford Int’l College of Engineering and Management, Balkumari, Lalitpur. The competition was jointly organized by Kathford Int’l College of Engineering and Management, Digitronix Nepal Pvt. Ltd and LogicTronix.

The main objective of the competition is to promote electronic hardware design based on FPGA [A Reconfigurable Chip Technology] in Nepal. This Competition is the continuation of the “3rd National FPGA Design Competition 2018” which was held at July 14, 2018, “Second All Nepal FPGA Design Competition 2017” which was held on July 15, 2017 at Kathford Intl’ College of Engineering and Management and “First FPGA Design Competition 2016” held at July 2. 2016 at IOE Pulchowk Campus.

FPGA is a chip technology, which is a short form of Field Programmable Gate Array. It is widely used on mobile phone, telecom systems, hardware systems, automotive infotainment to space missions. Due to its design flexibility and upgradability, the application is growing rapidly in global scenario. The top most academic and research labs did large scale research based on FPGA for high performance and power efficient solutions. This 4th edition of FPGA competition provides the platform for Nepalese enthusiast who want to excel academic and industrial career on electronics hardware design with FPGA.

Among the 11 participating teams, the winner of this competition is project “Vehicle to Vehicle Communication using FPGA” of Nikhil Thapa, Devendra Patel, Kishan Shrestha & Swarnim Shrestha from Khwopa Engineering College, they won the cash prize of NRs. 12,000. The first runner-up project is “Frequency Control of Synchronous Generator using Fuzzy Logic” of Rajiv Bishwokarma, Bishal Bhetwal, Shayarrn Khatiwoda from Kathmandu University, and the second runner-up, Binita Pariyar, Rasmila Thike, Sunmoon Tulsibakhya & Usha Dahal from Khwopa Engineering College with the project “Voting Machine”, received Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 4000 respectively. The award winners will also get an opportunity to receive training on Xilinx Zynq FPGA development board and Internship on FPGA research and development at Digitronix Nepal.

The competition also get request from the international participants from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-India , Egypt and USA. For addressing those request, Digitronix Nepal and LogicTronix also organizing the “International FPGA Design Competition 2019” an online version of competition.  The winner of this international competition will be announced at August 10, 2019

An advisor of this event Mr. Deepesh Man Shakya, a Xilinx FPGA Engineer said this 4th edition of FPGA Design Competition has put another milestone in introducing and enhancing FPGA education in Nepal and provide a platform for creating FPGA based research and development centers. Mr. Shakya said such initiatives could potentially turn into a research ecosystem on FPGA with providing hi-tech engineering jobs to many aspiring engineers within the country.

Dr. Mahesh Chandra Luitel , Principal of Kathford International College of Engineering and Management congratulate all the participant and winners of the competition. The co-ordinator of this competition Mr. Krishna Gaihre from Digitronix Nepal & LogicTronix applaud for the immense interest from engineering colleges and students towards FPGA Research and Development. Digitronix Nepal is currently focused on training, research and development of hardware designs based on FPGA. Digitronix Nepal also believes that within few years it will create number of opportunities for Nepalese Engineering Graduates on the field of FPGA Design & VLSI Design.

The chief guest at the event Dr. Surendra Shrestha, Head of Department of Electronics and Compute of IOE Pulchowk Campus lauded the event organizers and supporters for the effort they have put.
